What is open play, exactly?

There's no fixed schedule of matches. You show up, put your paddle on the rack for whichever court you want, and play when your paddle reaches the front. Games are short, groups shuffle constantly, and you leave whenever you're done — play as much or as little as you want.

How does the paddle rack work?

Each court has a rack on the fence. Slide your paddle into the next open slot; the order of paddles is the order of play. When a court opens up, the first four paddles come off and those players take the court. After your game, put your paddle back at the end of the line. If you're stepping away, take your paddle off the rack so nobody waits on you.

What's the difference between the Gauntlet Court and the Lounge Court?

Both courts run the same way — four players on, four off after every game — but they play very differently. The Gauntlet is where the competitive games happen: to 11, win by 2, and expect people playing hard. The Lounge is relaxed: to 11, win by 1, mixed levels, quick turns. Same rack on both, and you can switch between them any time.

How do I sign up?

Use the sign-up form at https://forms.gle/Ygdt35G4QhXWCERV6. It's free and takes a minute. We cap it at 24 players a week so the courts don't get backed up — once the week fills, sign-ups close until the next one.

Question 5

Do I have to stay the whole morning?

Accepted Answer

Not at all — that's the point of the format. Play as much or as little as you want: two games and go, or rack up again all morning. Nobody's waiting on you to finish anything.

I'm a beginner. Is this for me?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Start on the Lounge Court, where levels are mixed and games turn over quickly. And if you want to get better, ask any organizer for tips — we'll take five or ten minutes off to the side on serving, dinking, the kitchen rule and positioning. It's free, available any week, and open to any level, not just beginners.

What's the group like?

Casual and social — that's the point of it. Most people are beginner to intermediate, nobody's keeping records, and the Gauntlet Court is competitive only in the sense that people play hard on it. Now and then a few of us go get food or coffee nearby afterwards, and once in a while something bigger comes together — not every week, and always optional.

What if I don't know anyone?

Most people show up alone. The rack pairs you with whoever else is at the front of the line, so you'll have played with half the group by the end of the morning without having to organize anything — and if people are getting food after, you're invited.

What happens if it rains?

Weather-dependent outdoor courts mean we may need to cancel a week if conditions are bad. We'll communicate any cancellations via email as early as possible.

Is there a fee to join?

No — the open play sessions are completely free. Just sign up, show up, and play.

Do I need my own paddle?

Accepted Answer

Bring one if you have one — the rack system runs on paddles, so it's the easiest way to hold your spot. If you don't have one yet, say so when you arrive and we'll lend you a spare.
